Mentone Grammar

History and Tradition

Frogmore House - 1923

Mentone Grammar has a proud history dating back to the 1920s, when the school began in a local Church of England hall, before moving to its present site in 1923, under new management. After many years of private ownership, Mentone Grammar became an affiliated school of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne in 1957, and to this day remains an Anglican School with an ecumenical outlook.

In 1923 the Correll family's Edwardian, two-storey timber and stucco-rendered house, 'Frogmore' was purchased to become the school and boarding house. It is now the site of the Principal's administration.

In 1958, Mentone Grammar became a member of the Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria. Under the guidance of Headmasters (Henry Tonkin, Charles Thorold, Lionel Large, Keith Jones, Neville Clark, Tim Argall and currently Principal, Mal Cater) and under the constancy of governance from the Board of Management, the School has continued to grow, develop and has maintained a strong reputation for educational excellence.

In 2006, Mentone Grammar became co-educational with the introduction of girls to the School. This has been an outstanding success with girl enrolments steadily increasing across all year levels from ELC-12.  Our unique educational model provides the best of both worlds for girls and boys with both co-education and single gender classes offered at various stages of adolescence.

Crest and Mottocrest.gif

The Motto, ‘Labore et Honore’, translates as ‘by work and with honour’.  This redesigned school crest first appeared in 1957.

A diagonal sash carries the motto across a concave-sided shield. The open book represents the Bible; the stars are those of the Southern Cross, and the mitre represents the church.
