Cultural Exchange
Cultural exchange
Students at Mentone Grammar have the opportunity to participate in the School's Cultural Exchange program, at a number of different year levels, and in a number of different countries.
These opportunities provide students with first hand understanding of different cultures and lifestyles and in some cases, opportunity to work on linguistic fluency.
The School has exchanges with the following countries:
- Germany
- Japan
- Papua New Guinea
Periods of exchange vary, from two weeks through to one year. Enquiries about the programs to Germany and Japan should be directed to the LOTE department, whilst those regarding PNG should be directed to the school chaplain Rev Roger Williams.
Papua New Guinea Cultural Exchange
The School has developed links over a number of years with our nearest neighbour and therefore provides opportunities for students to have a most different and challenging experience which to many has been life changing.
In Year 11 students can walk the Kokoda Track (one of the world's most difficult treks), stay in a village, ride bikes along the idyllic coastal road of remote New Ireland, kayaking around the islands off Kavieng visit the volcano devastated town of Rabaul, to mention just a few items on the itinerary.
These trips are escorted by experienced staff and may include male and female students from other schools.
The aim of these trips is for students to mix with the local people enabling them to understand their rich culture and fascinating lifestyle. This time away also provides an avenue of historical, geographical, cultural and religious insight giving the students the ability to reflect on their own values and ways. Mentone Grammar also sponsors PNG students to complete their education at our School. Mentone Grammar families are generous of heart and mind in the way they support this program.
