Level Crossing Removal Updates

The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) is removing 18 level crossings and building 12 new stations as part of a $3 billion upgrade of the Frankston line that will improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often.

In order to ensure that our community is informed about the progress and impact of nearby works on the Level Crossing Removal Project, Mentone Grammar has created this site to house updates and information we receive from the LXRP team as it relates to our School.

What’s changing? – Project overview

Major works have commenced to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing at Balcombe Road, Mentone. This entails the rail line being lowered into a rail trench with the roads to be rebuilt at their current level.

A new Mentone Station will be built as part of the project, with the existing heritage-listed station used in the final design as part of a new ‘heritage bridge’ over the rail line. The project will include more than three kilometres of walking and cycling paths connecting the Mentone and Cheltenham station precincts. It will also include landscaping, and improved lighting, accessibility and car parking.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2021.

Council buses will replace trains on the Frankston line from Moorabbin to Frankston for certain periods throughout January and February 2020.

Mentone Railway Station, among others along the Frankston line, will be closed from Sunday 2 February until last service on Sunday 16 February2020. Buses will replace trains between Moorabbin and Frankston during this period.

AFTER SCHOOL: Students travelling north
Students who travel north by train (towards the city) from Mentone Station should walk to Mentone Station as usual and board a replacement bus service going north.

AFTER SCHOOL: Students travelling south
Students who travel south by train (towards Frankston) will be offered a dedicated bus service which leaves from Mentone Grammar at 3.55pm. The bus will depart from outside the Bayview Campus on Warrigal Rd, near the supervised crossing and take students to each station between Parkdale and Chelsea. Students who need to travel further can then board other replacement bus services.

During this time, LXRP advises students to plan for extra time in their journey to and from school.

This is a great time to consider the feasibility of your child jumping on board our Mentone Grammar Bus Service. Find out more on our website: www.mentonegrammar.net/bus
