Level Crossing Removal Updates

The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) is removing 18 level crossings and building 12 new stations as part of a $3 billion upgrade of the Frankston line that will improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often.

In order to ensure that our community is informed about the progress and impact of nearby works on the Level Crossing Removal Project, Mentone Grammar has created this site to house updates and information we receive from the LXRP team as it relates to our School.

What’s changing? – Project overview

Major works have commenced to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing at Balcombe Road, Mentone. This entails the rail line being lowered into a rail trench with the roads to be rebuilt at their current level.

A new Mentone Station will be built as part of the project, with the existing heritage-listed station used in the final design as part of a new ‘heritage bridge’ over the rail line. The project will include more than three kilometres of walking and cycling paths connecting the Mentone and Cheltenham station precincts. It will also include landscaping, and improved lighting, accessibility and car parking.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2021.
