Head Prefect Tom a Tuckwell Scholar 2016

Published: Tuesday, 21 July 2015

Congratulations to Head Prefect Tom Goodwin on being announced as a Tuckwell Scholar to ANU in 2016. Only 25 scholarships are issued nationally each year, and it is a delight to see Tom's name on the list!

Tom says he's so excited and incredibly fortunate to receive the scholarship, which came after a rigorous three round application process beginning in February and ending with a weekend on campus at ANU. "I was up against 75 amazing applicants from around Australia who were invited to the ANU for an interview weekend, which involved group interviews, and gruelling individual interviews in front of 10 panellists, who challenged almost every answer we gave in order to force us to argue a point of view." Tom believes his debating experience really helped and he is also extremely grateful to his MG teachers who provided letters of support.

Tom plans to study Law/PPE (philosophy, politics and economics) and has aspirations to become a Human Rights Lawyer at the UN. He is also a semi-professional basketballer and plans to continue this when in the ACT and hopefully get to play in representative teams.

"The Tuckwell vision is to see highly talented and motivated school leavers fulfil their potential and reinvest their knowledge, skills and experience in ways that positively benefit others. The program has a focus on giving back to Australia and is the only one of its kind that nurtures Scholars to fulfil their broader community ambitions over and above the pursuit of an undergraduate degree."

Best of luck Tom - a most deserving recipient!
