Remembrance Day 2011 gave the Old Mentonians Association an opportunity to introduce the children of Years 5 and 6 to the twelve past Mentone Grammar students who gave their lives in defence of their country. The Service, held on the lawn in front of Frogmore House, actively involved 28 Year 6 children in readings and the laying of crosses for each of our 'fallen'.
Prior to the service the students were given a talk by the Alumni Director, Greg Wilkinson, on the meaning and origin of Remembrance Day, as well as being shown school photos and given information about our twelve war dead.
“To give a human face to the dead gave a very powerful message,” Mr. Wilkinson said. “Another powerful message was the attendance of 92 year old former student Mr Jim Beruldsen. Jim’s brother, Kenneth, was killed over Norway in 1944. Jim has enjoyed a long and happy life, something his brother was denied.”
Other Mentone Grammar students participated in the combined local schools service at the Mentone RSL. This included our Head of Music Gavin Cornish who acted as bugler, and members of our Cadet Unit were centre stage.
Lest we forget.
