Application Information and English Requirements

In order to apply to Mentone Grammar as a ‘Local Student’ the applicant must hold (or is a dependent of persons who hold) a permanent, bridging, or temporary visa; this includes New Zealand citizens.

Any student on a visa who does not have English as their first language is required to have an appropriate level of English language proficiency prior to entry to Mentone Grammar.

Students applying to enter Years 4 - 11 will be required to take the Australian Education Assessment Services (AEAS) English language test which will recommend the length of study required at an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) Centre in Melbourne.

The AEAS test results provide detail regarding the student’s abilities (stanine scores) together with current proficiency in English and is one of the key measures of the candidate’s suitability for entry. Other means of determining suitability include school-based assessments and conduct during the enrolment interview.

Local students on visas entering Years 4 - 11 should take the AEAS at least 6 – 12 months prior to their anticipated commencement date. We recommend starting the English language process 18 months prior to the proposed commencement at Mentone Grammar to provide enough time for the student to complete the assessment and any ELICOS studies to ensure they are ready to commence school at the beginning of the academic year. Please note the AEAS report is valid for 12 months.

We require a minimum AEAS score of 70 (upper intermediate) and stanine score of 5 (average) to apply and be eligible to attend an enrolment interview.

Agent fees will not be paid for students on a visa who are eligible to apply to the School as a ‘Local Student’.

Local students on a visa who are enrolled at Mentone Grammar, irrespective of age, must live with a parent/legal guardian. It is the responsibility of the family to organise an interpreter if required.
