Protecting the Young People in our Care

At Mentone Grammar we are committed to protecting our students from all aspects of harm by creating and maintaining a student safe culture.

Mentone Grammar takes a zero-tolerance approach to any behaviours that jeopardise student safety and wellbeing as all students deserve to learn in a calm and focused environment where they feel safe.

The School has established strategies, practices, policies and procedures in order to comply with Ministerial Order 1359 and to embed a culture of child safety within the School.

Mentone Grammar appreciates that a student safe environment looks different for every student, and in delivering this, supports and respects the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, students from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as students with a disability, students who identify as LGBTQIA+, those with challenging home situations or who are otherwise vulnerable.

Our Support Systems

Every staff member plays a role in our Student Wellbeing program and is supported by our professional team of Psychologists, Careers Counsellors, Chaplains and Nurses. Our Mentors provide the structured support students experience each day.

We encourage any student who feels unsafe to confide in their Mentor, or another trusted adult, or to contact one of the School’s Student Safety Officers (SSO) in person or via email:

Child Safe Standards​

Mentone Grammar takes all reasonable steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students. Some of these steps to protect out students from harm and abuse include:

  • Embed a culture of Child Safety through all levels of Mentone Grammar
  • Establish a culturally safe environment for all students
  • Ensure students feel empowered in their rights and are involved in decisions that affect them
  • Families and the community are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing
  • Actively promote equality and respect each students’ diverse needs
  • Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing and harm minimisation strategies are implemented

In order to support this Mentone Grammar has created a simple guide for students, parents and carers, staff, volunteers and contractors on how to report Child Safety concerns or instances.

Safety Message from the Australian Federal Police

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) through the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) is seeing a concerning global trend of teenage males being targeted to send explicit images of themselves and then blackmailed. This is called sexual extortion, or sextortion. 

The AFP is urging families to have important safety conversations to prevent young people from becoming victims. This crime can have serious wellbeing and psychological impacts.
