In 2026, Mentone Grammar is excited to introduce French to the curriculum, beginning with our Year 7 students. This new subject opens the door to a rich linguistic and cultural world, giving students the opportunity to develop global awareness, curiosity and confidence from the very start of their secondary journey.
Leading this new program is French teacher Megan Champ, who is passionate about building an engaging and supportive language-learning environment for students encountering French for the first time.
“Introducing French for the first time means I get to spark that initial curiosity and help them discover the joy of communicating in another language. I want to create a positive culture around language learning, designing engaging experiences, and setting strong foundations that will grow with the French department.”
Learning French will support students not only academically, but also personally and culturally. Through language learning, students are encouraged to think beyond their own experiences and develop skills that will serve them in an increasingly connected world.
“Beyond learning the language itself, I hope students gain a broader worldview, greater cultural awareness, and a sense of curiosity about life beyond their own experiences. Studying French strengthens their cognitive skills, builds resilience through challenge, and encourages creativity and confidence in expressing themselves.”
For students new to languages, Ms Champ is focused on making lessons welcoming, interactive and enjoyable. Activities such as games, songs, storytelling and cultural exploration will help students experience French as something lively and accessible.
“We will use games, songs, stories, movement, and real-life cultural moments to make French feel alive rather than intimidating. My goal is for students to feel welcomed, supported, and excited to explore French with me.”
One cultural tradition Ms Champ is particularly excited to share with students is French regional cuisine, which offers a meaningful way to connect language with history and identity.
“From Breton crêpes to Alpine raclette, every specialty reflects a unique identity. I can’t wait to share this with students and show them how cuisine can be a window into a culture.”
The introduction of French marks an exciting step forward for languages at Mentone Grammar. We look forward to seeing our Year 7 students embrace this opportunity and begin their language-learning journey with confidence and curiosity.
