JUNIOR SCHOOL

Foundation – Year 6

Our Junior School Campus offers a vibrant, nurturing environment where students from Foundation (Prep) – Year 6 grow academically, socially, and emotionally. We blend explicit teaching with inquiry and play-based learning to foster curiosity, creativity, and a deep sense of belonging.

Literacy and numeracy are central to all learning in the primary years, complemented by a range of specialist subjects including Chinese language

and culture, humanities, performing arts, physical education, science, technologies and visual arts.

Relationships & Wellbeing

Strong relationships are at the heart of our learning, creating a supportive environment where every student feels valued. Our expert educators nurture caring, resilient learners who appreciate diversity and thrive in a culture of respect. The RULER Wellbeing Framework, developed by Yale University, equips students with emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and the skills to contribute meaningfully to society through service.

Every student when they join Mentone Grammar is appointed to one of ten Houses for life. House spirit and belonging are integral to our vibrant community, fostering friendships, teamwork, and healthy competition. From Foundation – Year 12, House activities create a sense of pride and connection that strengthens relationships across the School.

Developing Independence

Year 5 marks the start of the ‘Apart’ phase of our Together-Apart-Together model from Years 5 – 9, providing tailored support and space for open discussion at this important stage of development. It is also a key intake year, with new students joining the School as friendships expand and interests broaden.

In the upper primary years, literacy and numeracy remain central, complemented by a diverse range of specialist subjects as outlined above, as well as entrepreneurship, design thinking, and our Global Changemakers program. Students benefit from targeted wellbeing initiatives and leadership opportunities that foster independence, resilience, and a strong sense of identity.

Learning is dynamic and lifeworthy, with project-based experiences that spark curiosity and purpose. Students become confident problem finders and solvers, developing communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. This approach equips them to thrive in a diverse, hyper-connected world and ensures they leave Junior School confident, capable, and ready for secondary learning.

In the primary years, students form deep connections as they are nurtured to grow into their best selves. Within the supportive and dynamic environment of our Junior School Campus, they are challenged intellectually, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually, while having fun learning, questioning, exploring, and creating lifelong memories with their friends and peers.
