OUR TEACHERS THEIR STORIES: ALICIA TAN

Culture, community, and courage, these are the threads that weave through Alicia’s journey from Singapore to Mentone Grammar.

As a Junior School Chinese Teacher, Alicia Tan has a way of bringing language and tradition to life, creating experiences that connect students to culture in meaningful ways. I first met her while photographing the School’s Chinese celebrations, and I watched in awe as the event unfolded with meticulous care. It wasn’t just a celebration; it was a bridge between language, tradition, and community.

Alicia explains how she was drawn to the diversity of the Mentone Grammar community. “A multicultural environment allows students to develop respect and understanding for different cultures which I truly value.” She also treasures the trust the School gives her to create experiences that bring heritage to life. Chinese competitions, cultural excursions, and celebrations like the Lunar New Year allow students the chance to explore Chinese culture and traditions hands-on. Foundation students craft Mandarin trees for red packets, Years 1 & 2 make lucky fish symbolising abundance, and older students create dragons and lanterns while learning the stories and symbolism behind them.

Alicia’s passion for teaching and culture is rooted in her childhood. “I have a very close relationship with my family, especially my dad. One of my favourite memories is watching him prepare Chinese tea in the traditional way while sharing stories about China and our traditions,” she says. These early experiences nurtured her love for sharing knowledge and naturally led her toward teaching. “Even as a teenager, I helped my younger siblings and cousins with their homework. Seeing children make progress step by step gives me great fulfilment. Knowing I can help build their foundation motivates me every day.”

Her path was confirmed when she received a scholarship in Singapore to study Chinese and train as a teacher. “I feel very fortunate, as I have wanted to become a teacher since I was young. When I was awarded the scholarship, it felt like a natural step and reaffirmed that this was the path I was meant to pursue,” Alicia recalls.

Migration, however, has been one of her greatest teachers. Arriving in Australia in 2014 with just one suitcase, she faced uncertainty and the challenge of leaving everything familiar behind. “Moving away from my comfort zone forced me to grow in ways I had never imagined. Over the years, I have learned resilience, independence, and a deeper appreciation for my parents. It was one of the most challenging decisions of my life, but it shaped me into a stronger person.”

Her advice to students reflects this journey: step beyond comfort, embrace challenges, and trust that growth often begins where certainty ends. Through her teaching, Alicia offers more than language; she fosters culture, belonging, and inspiration, enriching the Mentone Grammar community every day.
