NEW PRINCIPAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear Members of the Mentone Grammar School Community,

As you are aware our Principal, Mr Mal Cater, advised the Board last August that he will end his tenure in December 2023. This will conclude 23 exemplary years of service, 17 years as Principal preceded by six years as Deputy Headmaster.

I also informed you that a Board Committee had been formed to focus on the recruitment of a new Principal and, that as Chair of the Board, I would lead that Committee.

After an extensive process, our Board is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Andrew (Andy) Müller as the next Principal of Mentone Grammar, commencing in January 2024. Andy was identified as the preferred candidate from a list of more than thirty highly qualified professionals who expressed interest in the position. This included candidates from six Australian states and overseas. Andy was the unanimous choice of the Panel and subsequently of the Board.

Andy is an experienced and respected educational leader with a proven ability to develop and lead highly performing teams. He has been the Principal of Scotch Oakburn College in Launceston for more than nine years and prior to that was Deputy Principal of St Leonard’s College in Melbourne. Previously he held senior positions, at Scotch College in Melbourne and taught overseas. His academic qualifications include a Master of Education from the University of Melbourne and a degree in Applied Science.

Under Andy’s leadership, Scotch Oakburn College has become a leading school in Tasmania with strong enrolment growth, major facility development and national awards for innovation. Andy has always been student focussed and collegial in his leadership. He has assisted in supporting a vibrant school community with equal attention to academic learning, wellbeing and co-curricular endeavour. He places strong emphasis on the value of a broad-based education on the development of fine young people.

During the interview process the Board was impressed by Andy’s abilities as a progressive leader, including his deep experience in co-education; his exceptional personal qualities and his strong alignment with Mentone Grammar’s ‘happy, healthy and high achieving’ culture.

On behalf of the School community, we very much look forward to welcoming Andy, his wife Georgia, and their daughter Eliza, to Mentone Grammar.

Warmest regards,

Ross Joblin
Chair
