Mentone Grammar

Jarrod O’Neill

Deputy Principal

B App Sc, Grad Dip Sports Sc, MSL

Growing up in Melbourne, Jarrod always had a passion for sport. At school, he was up for ‘anything and everything’ that would get him out on a court, field or track, so it was a natural progression that he went on to study Sports Science and Education at university.

Jarrod gained a placement at the Hawthorn Football Club which evolved into ongoing work, designing training programs for the athletes and coordinating their rehabilitation. However, he was drawn back to teaching as he wanted to make a difference in young people’s lives.

His first teaching role was at Camberwell Grammar before he took up the position as Head of Sport at Camberwell Girls’ Grammar. “It was great to be in a role where I could encourage and strategically cultivate the same passion for physical fitness that I have. Sport in schools is not just about your ability, it’s about being active and giving something new a try.”

As Jarrod gained experience in the management of a department, his interests turned to school leadership. Jarrod studied a Masters in School Leadership in 2003 at the University of Melbourne. He was promoted to Head of Senior School and then to Deputy Vice Principal where he significantly contributed to the advancement of the school.

After 11 years of service, Jarrod moved to join the Executive Team at Mentone Grammar as the Deputy Principal of Operations. “What I enjoy most about the role is knowing that the work we do really makes a positive impact. This School has such a wonderful culture that supports young people to be more than just high achievers, but to be well-rounded, good people.”

Now located on the bayside, Jarrod enjoys the healthy lifestyle of living by the beach with his wife and four children.
